J G Shelton and Company Limited was formed in 1963 to provide a comprehensive service to
the cremation movement. In addition to offering a nationwide repair and maintenance
service for existing cremation facilities, the licence for the “Diamond” cremator was granted to the company by the West Midlands Gas Board.
The founder, Mr J G Shelton, worked for many years with Messrs. Gibbons Engineering Limited
on both furnaces and cremators at Lenches Bridge and London. It was due to this dual location policy that J G Shelton, since its formation, has had bases in the London area and in the West Midlands enabling it to offer a comparatively local service
to the majority of the UK.
Shortly after its formation the Company was given orders in respect of cremator facilities
by the City of Birmingham and this association has continued to this day.
Over four decades the Company has now installed cremator facilities in over 100 crematoria across the UK.
In the early seventies the Company expanded its field of activity and commenced work overseas.
The Company has now installed over 60 cremators in ten countries outside of
the UK, spread over three continents.
In the eighties the Company continued to expand its range of activities, with the incorporation
of two associated engineering companies in the West Midlands and the long
established company of G P Wincott Ltd., of Sheffield. Manufacturing facilities at Kingswinford, combined with technical expertise at Ashtead and Sheffield formed a solid foundation for the Company’s
thermal engineering and incineration activities throughout the UK.
In the nineties, a decade in which the Environmental Protection Act:1990 has undoubtedly
has a massive influence, the Company pioneered the development of new environmentally
acceptable cremation equipment with the installation of three Diamond 2000EF
cremators during the summer of 1990.
Recognising that information technology would play an important role in the environment
of the nineties the Company employed its own systems department to produce
packages not only for cremator control but additionally for crematorium and cemetery administration.
Coupled with design and administrative staff, with qualifications ranging from University
training to many years of experience in the field, our staff are experienced
in all facets of production. It is the Company’s policy to employ qualified, experienced and capable staff who are capable of meeting customers requirements across the length and breadth of the UK and
abroad.
